The short answer
Walk to the end of Terminal 3, follow the signs for “Metro”, buy a three-zone ticket (DKK 30 for an adult) from the machine or the Rejsebillet app, and take the M2 towards Vanløse. It is 14 minutes to Kongens Nytorv for Nyhavn and the old town, 16 to Nørreport, and 12 to Christianshavn.
There is no night gap to plan around: the Metro runs 24 hours a day, so a 02:00 landing is still a metro ride. Trains are every 2–3 minutes in the daytime and every 8–20 minutes overnight.

Finding the metro at Copenhagen Airport
The metro station is above ground at the end of Terminal 3, past the arrivals hall — a two-minute walk with a trolley, all on the level, and signposted “M” the whole way. It is the only metro station at the airport, and the only direction trains go is towards the city, so there is nothing to get wrong.
Do not confuse it with the train station, which is one level below and serves DSB regional trains to Copenhagen Central, Malmö and Sweden. The train is slightly faster to København H; the Metro is more frequent and goes to more of the places visitors actually stay.

Which ticket to buy at the airport
A single journey from the airport into town crosses zones 4, 3 and 1 — but the ring-zone rule caps an all-metro journey at three zones, so you buy a three-zone ticket for DKK 30. Children aged 12–15 pay half; two under-12s travel free with an adult.
If you plan to use public transport more than twice a day while you are here, buy a City Pass Small instead: DKK 100 for 24 hours, DKK 220 for 72, and it covers zones 1–4, which includes this exact journey.
