Kongens Nytorv station on the M1
Kongens Nytorv is a Copenhagen Metro station below ground in the middle of Copenhagen, served by the M1, M2, M3 and M4. It opened in 2002 and sits in zone 1 of the regional fare system.
Right in the middle of Copenhagen, Kongens Nytorv is a square laid out in 1670 and framed by stately buildings, among them the Old Stage of the Royal Theatre and Hotel d’Angleterre. Escalators lead from the station straight up into the Magasin department store, a handy shortcut to the pedestrian street Strøget. Just beside the square lies Nyhavn, the old canal harbour: in July and August it fills with summer crowds, and in December mulled wine and toasted almonds scent the air.
Follow Nyhavn to its far end and you reach Skuespilhuset, the Royal Theatre’s playhouse, as well as Inderhavnsbroen, the bridge that crosses over to Christianshavn. Kongens Nytorv also has a special place in the network: it is the one station where all four metro lines meet, so passengers can change here between any of them.
On the M1, Nørreport is 2 minutes back down the line and Christianshavn is 2 minutes further on.
Kongens Nytorv is an interchange: the lines meet inside one station, so changing between them means walking across a platform or riding one escalator — there is nothing to tap again and nothing more to pay.
Trains call here 24 hours a day, every day of the year — every two minutes at rush hour, every three during the day and evening, and every 8 to 20 minutes overnight depending on the day of the week.
