Rejsekort, Basiskort and the Copenhagen travel apps

The plastic Rejsekort closed on 29 June 2026. Here is what replaced it, how to check your balance, how to top up — and how to get your money back off an old card.

The physical Rejsekort is closed. The blue plastic card was withdrawn on 29 June 2026. It can no longer be topped up or used for new journeys. If you still have one with money on it, you can have the balance paid out — see getting your money back below.

What replaced the Rejsekort

Denmark has split the old card into three products, and which one you want depends entirely on how often you travel and whether you are happy using a phone.

  • Order the personal one at rejsekort.dk; buy the anonymous one at a 7-Eleven or kiosk
  • Valid across Denmark except Bornholm

Checking in and out on the Metro

Pay-as-you-go only works if you check in and check out. On the Metro the readers are the yellow Check Points, which stand by the lifts at the top of the stairs and, at larger stations, next to the ticket machines. There are no barriers, so nothing physically stops you walking past one.

  • Check in before you go down to the platform — not on it.
  • Check out when you leave your final station, or you will be charged as if you had travelled to the end of the line.
  • Changing between metro, bus and train mid-journey does not need a new check-in with the Rejsekort app; with a Basiskort you check in and out at each leg.
  • Travel outside rush hour and 20%% comes off automatically at check-out.

Getting your money back from an old Rejsekort

Money left on a closed card is not lost. Rejsekort runs a refund process: you block the card and ask for the balance to be paid out, which is done through rejsekort.dk or Rejsekort Customer Service. A personal card refunds to the registered bank account; for an anonymous card you will need the card itself, since there is no record of who owns it.

The deposit paid when the card was bought is refunded in the same process.

No. The physical Rejsekort closed on 29 June 2026 and can no longer be used or topped up. Use the Rejsekort app, the Rejsebillet app or a Basiskort instead.
If you mean the app: the balance is on the front screen. If you mean an old plastic card, you can no longer check it at a machine — you have to go through the refund process at rejsekort.dk to get the remaining money back.
The Rejsekort app tops up with a payment card or MobilePay inside the app. A personal Basiskort is not topped up at all — it charges your journeys once a day. An anonymous Basiskort is loaded with cash or a card at a 7-Eleven or kiosk.
Usually not. For a few days in the city, single tickets in the Rejsebillet app or a City Pass are simpler and need no registration. A card only pays off if you are here for weeks.
An anonymous Basiskort needs enough on it to cover the journey you check in for; the Check Point will refuse a check-in if the balance is too low. The app and the personal card charge afterwards, so there is no minimum.
You are charged as though you travelled to the far end of the line, which is expensive. The Rejsekort app has a “smart check-out” option that closes the journey for you — worth turning on.
An anonymous Basiskort can be used by anyone, and the Rejsekort app can check in fellow travellers on the same phone. A personal Basiskort is yours alone.
Yes — Basiskort and the Rejsekort app work on public transport across Denmark, apart from Bornholm. Three stations in Malmö are being added.
